The evo's were getting 4th gear at 140km/h at the end of the main straight aparently. I was just changing to 3rd about 80 meters out and hitting 120 or so.

Whitey's car has a shorter ratio box in it, the other evo's there werent the same..

Nice pictures Ian.

This is a really good event and im looking forward to making it next year with my sprinter.
With this and possibly mako track, we will never be short on somewhere to take the cars.
Good photos bud, that yellow silvia amazed me as to how well it performed as a track car, will be a bit more competition next year

nice pics, ... it's fun running a GTR through there on streeters..

I remember my last round, running her on streeter's @ giving the attessa a thorough working.. Still managed to steal 2nd from a few evo's..

So keen to give it another shot next year.. But don't see the point of running the track with a T04z.. :(

I can't wait to get back up there and race next year. My sprinter had it's first run here in Canberra, will have another one late Novemeber. The engine will come out for a freshen up over christmas and then it will be into it.

Cheers
Paul

Im pretty dam sure the To4z will be a bit more responsive than coops setup, athough it is a little laggy its really not something that you would struggle with just learn to drive with it how it is.. The turbo on my car is bigger than a T04z again and i reckon its just gonna make it a shit load of fun..

Yeah a 32 GTR on street tyres would have been a lot of fun for sure. I wasnt able to get around the hairpin onto the main straight properly in the R34 and couldnt get close to the inside ripple strip so I could line up for the chicane on the main straight. The corner was fast enough that it required 2nd gear but at that speed the engine wasnt making enough power to get the back to come around into a power oversteer situation to allow me to slide the car around the corner. All I got was massive amounts of understeer as a result of excercising my right foot.

I think GTR37's car with a light tune and a pair of N1 turbo's is the go for such a tight track. At the most a pair of GTS4 diff gears and the rest is suspension tuning and tyres. A to4z would have to be performing simular to evocoop's R32 with its monster GTRS setup.

yes, hungry (that's name I think) corner is a tricky one, specially with a front heavy GTR.. The Evo's get around it no problems...

After picking up the car and doing run in km's it seems to be pretty drive-able and I think that I will give the sprints another shot next year.. Drive's better then when it was stock :)

Tuned next week

Ta Coop
No worries mate.
Pretty keen for this year actually. I'll have new tyres straight up and just got a cusco sway bar for the race pig.
Also, at the last meeting last year they were telling me they were dropping 2 rounds of the series from the go kart track and having 2 on the parkland section of the v8 supercar track. Starting at the bridge down to the XXXX corner and back from a standing start. Sounds interesting. Grip levels will be amazing compared to the kart track.

Dear Peter,

I’m indebted to Phil Harrison, Track Inspector, for the following which is an extract from Phil’s communication to me:

I met with Warren Skimmings on Saturday 06 December to discuss the viability of using the Mako Trac go-kart track at Mareeba as a venue for sprints. Warren Skimmings had inspected the venue in detail on 13 October and had taken numerous photos and made suitable notes. Previous communications from you to Stuart Nicol, Warren Skimmings and me provided some details of this venue and its intended use as a temporary sprint circuit. We have all reviewed that information, together with information and aerial photos available on Mako Trac’s web site.

The meeting with Warren Skimmings reviewed in detail his photos and notes together with the other information noted above. The review was in detail, starting the dummy grid and progressing to the starting point, timing point, through each corner and straight ultimately to the finishing point and then procedures for returning cars to the dummy grid on completion of their run. Particular attention was paid to: -

  • The proximity of trees, fences, ditches, lakes and other hazards.
  • The condition of the track verge.
  • The potential for cars to leave the track at various points and the likely consequences thereof.
  • The presence of a hire car office outside the boundary fence between Turn 1 and Turn 2.
  • The speeds likely to be attained by competing cars at various points.
  • Conditions imposed by the owner of Mako Trac, in particular, his insistence that cars do not use the kerbs and his veto on the installation of temporary barriers.
  • The possibility of collision should more than one car be on the track at the same time.
  • The width and condition of the track surface. The pavement width is about 12m on the main straight and about 10m elsewhere. The pavement was thought to provide good grip when dry but become very slippery when wet.
  • A safe procedure for cars returning to the dummy grid area on completion of their run.
  • Safe viewing positions for spectators.
  • Facilities available at the track including the provision of timing transponders, traffic lights at three points, the ability to see all of the track from the timing building etc.
  • The proximity of the track to Mareeba (3 km approx.)
  • Various other matters.

Agreement was reached between Warren Skimmings and the undersigned that this venue could operate safely as a sprint track subject to the following special conditions: -

  • The track licence valid for a dry track conditions only.
  • Vehicle types limited to sedans and substantial sports cars. Open wheeler racing cars, clubman type sports cars, hill-climb specials, off road vehicles, motor bikes and similar vehicles are not acceptable.
  • Spectators restricted to the inside of the timing building/club room. No spectators are to be allowed in other areas.
  • One vehicle only to use the track at the one time.
  • A chicane is to be inserted on the track between the timing point and Turn 1, at a point about 50m from Turn 1 where a subsidiary road effectively provides a widened track. This chicane shall use plastic bollards, traffic cones or other safe markers. Plastic mesh between markers may be added if required to better define the chicane. The chicane should divert cars to the left, then right and finally left so that the cars are slowed before Turn 1 and placed in a position on the track to assist in the safe negotiation of Turn 1.
  • No more than four successive laps for each run.
  • Cars can start accelerating at the end of the dummy grid before the timing point.
  • On completion of their run, cars should return to the dummy grid area by turning right onto a subsidiary road near the chicane. This road leads onto the main track between Turn 3 and Turn 4. They should then follow the track and turn right onto the subsidiary road which connects Turn 4 and Turn 11, and finally into the dummy grid area.
  • The track owner has indicated that he would adopt a ‘three strikes and you’re out’ policy towards ‘kerb-hoppers’.

The points noted above were further discussed and agreed at our meeting today.

I recommend that CAMS grant a licence for this track subject to the conditions listed above.

Peter, the information above is FYI, I’m confident that CAMS will respond kindly to an Application for Track Licence from your club; please communicate direct with Lisa Catchpole who will assist you to lodge an application.

Regards

Milton

Milton Brennan
