Wayne Allen, Speedway President.
Hi all,
Attached is a copy of letters from Matt Hermes relating to ongoing burnout competitions for 2010 and a submission to allow drifting to take place during 2010.
We all know that the burnout competition has grown over recent years and has been very lucrative for the speedway. Even if its not your thing, you have to say it draws a very healthy crowd who spend their dollars at the complex.
Matt has done his homework in relation to staging drifting comps, however other than a few minor trial events in the past , nothing has eventuated.
The stumbling block is that the Kart club are afraid that the track will be damaged . With what Matt has suggested in his submission, we should revisit this proposal as a club and make a decision one way or another.
With our ever escalating costs to run and maintain the speedway complex, we as a club will need to pursue all avenues of collecting revenue.
I would imagine this item will be on the agenda for early next year. Pass this info on and lets know your thoughts.
Attached Letter.... (by me)
I am writing this letter to the main body in hope they can agree on allowing drifting to continue at the Cairns Speedway in 2010. Below is a little about the past, and where we want to go.
During 2008 we had a number of drift events held at the Cairns Speedway. The committee gave the drift club permissions to run a number of small trial events with small vehicle numbers which went well. There was then two public events which had huge support. Between these events with hundreds of passes at each event, Robbie Bolger in his 700HP+ Monaro and other professional drivers there has been no signs of damage to the track.
Unfortunately we've hit a bit of a brick wall and nothing has happened since, despite a lot of effort throughout 2009 to get these events back on. I believe the most of the trouble is due to the Cairns Kart Club opposing it due to the threat of damage to the track.
I've personally made effort to discuss drifting with them and they are totally unwilling to even negotiate or discuss the topic. Michael Peake nor David Harris had any consideration for drifting.
Despite offering to concrete the edges of the track to reduce damage to grass (causing pits) and offering $10,000 bond for use of the track we've still got no where. We also had the track inspected by roads project manager from the Cairns Regional Council, who also offered to carry out maintenance work, but was also rejected by the Kart club.
The truth of the matter is the karts are only worried about their own choice of motor sport, and not others. They've made it clear they are looking to leave the Speedway and the track will be left how it is and deteriorate beyond repair with no one to maintain it.
The opportunity for the Cairns Speedway to have a dedicated team organising the only drifting north of the Sunshine Coast is a huge draw card which will bring racers from Cairns, Townsville, perhaps even as far as Mackay and surrounding regions. The previous event had two cars from Brisbane which loved the track and have nagged me to as when the next date is so they can come back. There has also been many Townsville drivers keen to drive.
If drifting is only half as successful as the Cairns Burnouts are it would still generate $15,000+ a year towards the Speedway bank. This is a great opportunity for the Speedway to generate more revenue, involve more young people in motor sport and give people a legal alternative to the street.
Our inspector, from CRC, explained that with no maintenance that the track only has a few years left in it whether cars use it or not. It's old and worn and just needs some money put towards it. Similar to rust on a car, whether you drive it or not, the rust gets worse naturally. We arranged to have the track crack sealed and other prolonging maintenance done at our cost but the Karts opposed it and it was not done.
We would like to pencil in four (4) dates for 2010 to hold our drift meetings. Similar to the burnouts, all gate and bar money would go to the Speedway and we could collect money from drivers to cover our own costs.
500 people through gate x $10ea = $5,000 with four events is $20,000 without the bar!
Thanks for your time and we hope you can allow and support this motor sport at the Cairns Speedway.
