Whats makes a car tough? It's clear you like the old school stuff, I quite like the blue car in the second pic but without seeing it in action I wouldn't call it tough

Im gunna get flamed here I know.
But can anyone REALLY class Imports in the "tough" category"""
maybe damn quick and such , but when you account for power to weight are they really tough????
Tough cars were penned before the interest in modding up Imports became popular
My idea of tough can really only include good ol muscle cars , beit yank or aussie ;)

Ok im just gunna step in the other room now and put on my flame proof suit :P

i'm with you mate, i just wanted to see what other people interprate as tuff cars and there reasoning behind this and thought it would be a good way for people from both sides of the fence (ricer and muscle) to compare and explaine there thoughts on the subject..

I have been on both side of the fence with this topic. My first car was an LX hatch with a 308 toughas for an 18y.o in Melbourne at the time. Then I caught the bug and bought a r33 skyline (I know it's a shallow thing to say but part ofreason I bought it was fore sluts the car pulled), however after a short time sold skyline. And am currently building a hj prem, and I'm not f**k'n around with it. It will be a drag/steet car. Engine will be a hard as nails SBC. So for me tough is tough and tough can only come in the form of Aussie/yank muscle. Big pipes, big stalls, big rubber and big cubes!

to me tough is a v8 a strong/tough v8 that has balls and is built to last! and to take whatever it gets given within reason. cubes does the job for me... it might be harder to get a v8 down to lower et's than a car with a turbo but i think it makes the car tougher as in low maintinence e.g you spent 10-20grand building a tough v8 and it'll last!

an import i don't think could ever be described as "tough" in the traditional sense, because they don't sound tough. but "tough" doesn't need to mean V8 either.... just listen to a properly sorted 6cyl torry, or most of the valiant 6's. they are tough sounding engines and go hard. I have yet to hear a tough sounding V6 yet, as in injected. i guess tough to me is just as much about the sound of an engine than the raw numbers it may produce. as for looks, old school will always look tougher than new style. i'll agree with cheeky. it doesn't get much tougher than Dodge Charger.

My definition of tough is an R33 GTR that a couple of mates have owned over the years and built up to a real machine, has an easily achieved 650 HP with the current turbo`s ( reliable to, not just V8`s make big reliable power guys ) but could make more if bigger ones were fitted. The massive cams and head work and note of a worked RB26 sound so good its hard to compare to a V8.... V8`s are tough but they dont sound the same revving at 7000rpm+ not even close to the sound of 2x turbos whistling at 1.4bar and the engine just singing in front of you..

For us import guys this is tough, might not look as tough in the engine bay compared to a blown V8 but when it comes on full boost and the combination of 650HP and 4wd traction hits hard its absolutely amazing, nothing else like it.....Im sure a couple of members on here can vouch for how tough this thing really is.

Another car that i consider TOUGH was the blue Camaro at Ingham, that sounded unreal and looked the part as well. He is not a QSS member that i am aware of so it doesnt really count.

I love the sound and toughness of big V8`s but how tough do the drivers feel when they are rumbling along and a 1250KG import with a measly 350~HP blows there doors off? So define tough....?

well, as the original post says, its not about speed. my tank would get walked by most of the imports in town, but i know which one gets the most looks cruising around.. and it ain't made of plastic.. lol. I think the problem with the newer cars is that they all seem the same. different body kits and colours don't seem to differentiate them enough as the old school ones. not sure how that works, but it seems to be true.

This depends on who`s looking.... most people these days look out and are interested more in the imports than anything and just get a mate to take you for a spin one day and vent the BOV and see how many looks you get

It is very sad in reality because some of them arent even worth looking at..... compared to some Decent V8`s such as yours and some others on this site.

i dont like the sound of a efi v8. i like the sound of most I6's aka ford, bmw and imports rb and the jz's. but i love the four bangers i am a converted aussie car person myself. i have had a ef taxi pax, au xls 5sp I6 ute. that sounded freakin tough for a I6. it had about 1 meter of exhaust from the pacemakers. shot flames out everywhere. and now i have a au v8 fairmont. completey standard......dont like it at all and dont like them when they have exhaust on them. i also have the datto. hmmmmmmm 1971 datsun 510. with a sr20det. damn you get the stares from people in that considering that it looks so povo with its flaky rusty white bonnet. and then old matey in his ss ute with the hot blode gets mega dusted. old zed are also my fave. my dad has a datsun 240 zed with a injected L28 cool in my books. he also has a wb panelvan with a 355 stroker injected.....with a supra 5sp i think?? not my cuppa tea but ill gladly take it when he passes away lol.

tough cars are in the eye of the beholder in every case. unless there was a vote then no one would agree.

further to my last. i reckon a tough car must not be a "bogan" car. but thats just me. ie something that isnt a new/mass produced new car.

vl to now for holden
ea to now for ford

old cars really
my exhaust isnt loud at all, but fark it sounds good bouncing of the limiter

I dunno, I am an import many myself and I would say you can't beat the sound of a V8. I love the sound Tanksys' car makes, sound wild. Imports can sound good to but I just don't think they compare to the big chunky and insane rumbles of a V8.

maybe damn quick and such , but when you account for power to weight are they really tough????

There are Skylines going around pushing in excess of 1,000HP from a measly 2.6/2.7L.

Mercury Motorsport has an S13 Silvia with an SR20 (2 litres for the import challenged kind :P) which recently ran a 10.506 @ 139.36MPH on Street Tyres, 548RWHP.

Still think they are fast coz they are light and don't make power? :P

Tough can be defined in both styles of cars as it is a new age and people are a bit more broad minded than back a few years ago!! Tuff to me is Protd's cortina that is awesome... But i also think an S-15 wih big mags and clean paint all so looks super tuff.... Like Deciet said the just JDM look is leading the way at the moment instead of all the brighter colours people are starting to choose the darker paint styles with the either dark/ or white race wheels.... Much of a muchness really i appreciate any car that looks good either it be import or old school cool..
