Hey guys got a nice odd mystery for you, and im hoping im in the right area for it.

Im on my L's currently driving a 94 celica, went for a drive on sunday, turned out of my driveway and was sitting at the lights at gatton and aumuller/hoare st, I live just at that corner if it helps.

So sitting there at the lights, pushed the clutch in knocked it into first, clutch was just at the point before it engages I get this loudish noise, three times. Like metal rubbing slowly or a lot of pressure being forced out of somewhere, like if you've had a shower in an older house you get a loud noise sometimes in the pipes, but if you turn the handles up or down it dissapears.

Anyway enough of trying to describe it. So sunday, noise, went for a drive monday, no noise. Didn't take it anywhere tuesday, but wednesday, I got the noise again. This time just turning onto the road same deal with the clutch.

I never here the noise again during the drive. So it seems its while the car is colder and once it has its little fit its all over never to be heard from again. Unless I leave it for a day and don't drive it.

So I may have confused everyone. The clutch itself is in brillliant condition so im unsure of what it could be.

Any help or ideas would be brilliant!

Checked the fluid level in the clutch reservoir?

Could also be the thrust bearing is slightly sticky on the input shaft.
Next time you get in to drive it, pump the pedal a few times before you start it and see if it still makes the noise once you're driving.

Thanks guys ill double check the fluid when I get home, though if I remember correctly it was fine before we drove up to atherton on saturday.

Mate did give it a bit of a thrash on the way back down, so it could be anything but we shall see.

@TheDon: why take it to the mechanic if it could be something simple I could do?

That's good and all, but some more insight apart from 'take it to the mechanic' may have been better.

Yeah, I guess he typed that cos he figures that if you are asking questions about it, you do not have a grasp on mechanics. But simple solution answers are all thats needed

Sounds like your clutch is glazed. Usually to fix it for sure would be to put in a new item straight up. Being tight on the foldable fun tickets i'd live with it till there is no grip left in it.

Just went for a drive (36 hours left!), Once again only happened at the start but it through off my every other day theory, but never happens when I take off from my mates house.

@BPM, I noticed tonight that I was about half way pulling the clutch out, so there was still a bit till engaging. but when i pushed it back in to stop to merge it made it after id had it flat to the floor for about 5 seconds.

We also noticed it sounds like a.... round sound? So like say you have a strip of something around your wheel that makes noise, but only cover one quarter of your wheel with it, you only hear it when that part hits the ground, and it fades in and out at start and end. But still, it only ever happens at the start of the drive when I leave my drive way which only adds to the confusion.

I should add, anyone who has driven the car has commented that the clutch is still in brilliant condition, as I was worried being a learner driver I'd destroy it.

Gunna ride it out for a while and see what happens, if it gets worse I'll drop it into the mechanic.
