V8 Supercars Australia’s Car of the Future (CoF) blueprint will open the door for new manufacturers to enter the sport from 2012, according to V8 Supercars Australia Chairman Tony Cochrane and CoF head Mark Skaife.

“Our open shopfront policy will be based on potentially attracting additional manufacturers,” Skaife said at the launch of the blueprint for the category’s future which is destined to cut costs and improve racing.

Skaife, who has been charged with developing the CoF blueprint, confirmed that the door was now open for new manufacturers to enter the sport, be it with an engine, chassis or both.

“We want to open the door to genuine high volume production, four-door sedans which will be configured as V8 rear wheel drive race cars under strict parity arrangements to compete equally against Falcons and Commodores,” he said.

“Any V8 engine can potentially be used where a manufacturer can modify one of its family V8 power-plants or utilise an existing category V8 Supercar engine. Who knows, this may open the door to teams fielding Nissans, Toyotas, Hyundais, Mazdas… whatever!”

Although no new manufacturer was announced by the category at the launch, Cochrane confirmed that he has been in talks with manufacturers.

“The level of communication and feedback has been good in the way they assess the sport,” he said.

“I’ve been encouraged. Some of them have spoken through automotive types and team owners, and some have spoken directly to me. The door is open and we are open to talk. Clearly it is very relevant (to them). If you’re a manufacturer, we offer a fantastic base.”

Despite the talk of new manufacturers, Cochrane was keen to stress the category’s healthy relationship with the current two manufacturers of Ford and Holden.

“I am delighted with our two current manufacturers,” he said. “We have a good working relationship with them at the highest level.”

He also stressed that the category wasn’t reliant on new manufacturers entering the sport.

“If, through this whole process (Car of the Future), all we do is get ourselves reorganised to make the racing more viable for our teams over the course of the next two years, then the exercise has been well and truly worth it and we’ll drive into the sunset with General Motors (Holden) and Ford and live happily ever after.

“We don’t need dozens of manufacturers to end up with a great championship. What we’ve got is very good, but if others want to come and join in then we are going to make it as easy as possible for them to join in.”

I'd love to see Chrysler or Dodge enter this with a Challenger or Charger. It'd give us MOPAR guys someone to support instead of having to settle for Fords. This is still a fair way off, but it's a step in the right direction me thinks.

My money is on BMW to join the fray if anyone is going to do it.

Maybe others will follow suit, maybe the whole thing won't be viable to anyone.
Hmmm.

I can smell.......stupidity.

I may actually bother to show some interest now... Something I haven't done since the 90's when it became a taxi race.

I don't like being told what to do, and when some aluminium cased box of gears and friction plates tells me that it's time to change up, I really get pissed off. I will decide when it's time to change gears and sometimes I'm right. So the old smarty-pants automatic transmission isn't my best friend

Hopefully they dont take most of the races overseas with this...

But it might force Holden and Ford to build some better V8's to compete with the Likes of Merc, BMW and what not.

Cubes simply wont cut it if they get involved.

as long as any changes don't detract from the racing itself. It is easily the most exciting form of motorsport due to the closeness of the racing, the ability for the cars to take a bump, and the ability of the drivers to give a bump! Taxi's they may be, but it leaves all other circuit racing for dead in terms of the spectacle, and this includes F1, which is lets be honest about the most boring racing there is.

This is the reason it was rated the fastest growing sport in Australia (based on people watching it) last year. I can't see that more manufacturers would detract, so i'm all for it in the early stages!

Ze Germans vill invade, und zey vill conquer.

Lexus won't be far behind.

The locals will really need to pull their finger out to remain competitive... Which can only be a GOOD thing.
As good as the actual racing is, the technology is stagnant and needs a damn good cage rattling.

Bullshit
Did you watch the race on the weekend? I was on the edge of my seat the whole race

I like v8 supercars but there is no real driver I go for, having webber representing Australia and doing well is very entertaining
F1 is much more complicated then v8 supercars as far as car set up, tyre choice, weather etc etc.
To win an f1 race everything has to be perfect
V8 supercars is more driver based, the best driver generally wins

Not saying its a bad thing just totally different, I like both

So do I... The sound of that thing at full noise makes me happy in the pants...

Two problems though.

Has 10 cylinders and 2 doors.

IS-F has the prerequisite bent 8, four doors and goes like f*cking stink.

BMW have a 4 door M3 now... (M5 would be better but is V10)

Merc have a few V8 variants of the C class...

Even Hyundai have a V8 sedan in the works.

Jaguar may even make a return! I'd like to see that...

Bring em all I say.
