POLICE will crush the first hoon drivers' cars to be destroyed in South Australia this morning at a scrap metal yard at Gillman.

Two cars will go under the crusher at Sims Metal about 10.45am.

A Toyota Cressida and a Nissan Pintara are destined for the scrap heap.

Police Commissioner Mal Hyde has the discretion to either crush or sell vehicles seized from convicted hoon drivers.

What a joke, i dont understand how crushing peoples cars could be legal! There are so many better ways to combat "hoon" driving, like building places for car enthusiasts to go. If there as keen as they say to save lives thats what they should do but it seems revenue comes first. As for them few people that dont learn, ban them from driving or throw them in jail for a bit thatd be heaps more of a deterrant. Crushing cars is only going to stop the repeat hoons that cant afford another car and even then you can pick up a sh*tbox capable of doing a skid for well under a grand anyway.
The only reason i go to work is to earn money to put into my car (food and rent are secondary), so if they crushed my car id go on the dole out of spite and spend all my dole money on fighting them in court... this is a FAIL from the beginning

It has been made "legal". I personally agree with the crushing of some offender's cars, however some of the other penalties for traffic offences is a bit harsh when you look at the sentences being handed out for crimes of violence in the community. I'm glad I don't live in SA but having said that a lot of these hoons have bought this on themselves. Best thing I suppose is don't do stuff that is illegal.

How many people are killed by hoons though? Bugger all. It's not about saving lives. Majority of road deaths are average people with inattention, not rested up, or just plain old accidents. Also no one gets any money from crushing a car. Probably get a bit of coin in the lead up having it crushed.

Remember they have to be done three times also. If you ask me it also increases the risk of high speed pursuits.

48 hours first time. That sucks. Thursday? You loose it longer due to weekends! And you have to pay to have it towed and impound fees on top of the fine.

3 months the second time. Now that really sucks. That surely has to be an eye opener.

3rd time, you really don't care about your car.

The biggest problem is that the people with shit box cars wouldn't care if their car got crushed and having read plenty of articles about cars being confiscated over the years they are typically shit boxes with young owners.

Australia needs tougher licensing laws and better driver education to improve the standards of ALL drivers. Until these happen nothing will change.

technically the 2nd time u lose ur car u lose it twice, 24 hours the time u get done, and then u get it back untill court, then u lose it for the 3 months, and u are not allowed to sell the car b4 that time either... though i dunno what would actually happen if u did

I don't like being told what to do, and when some aluminium cased box of gears and friction plates tells me that it's time to change up, I really get pissed off. I will decide when it's time to change gears and sometimes I'm right. So the old smarty-pants automatic transmission isn't my best friend

They can go suck a fat c**k if they think i'm goin to let them crush anything of mine! its my property i've paid for, crushing others peoples cars "legally" is just as f*cking bad as those piece of sh*t scum c*nts who key peoples cars, break into houses and trash them.

is not there property they dont have the right to touch the f*cking thing as far as im concerned. those stupid fat f*cks that throw the orders around really need to persue real criminals, get rid of the drugs, theives, murders, rapists, pedophiles and well you get the idea.

Meh this is probably get me flamed but I don't care. I am on my last warning and if the cops think there going to get my car for something small they have another thing coming. I am going to make damn sure it's worth losing the car. I put far too much into my car for it to just get taken due to a tiny chirp at the lights. FYI any type 2 offence in QLD such as driving an unregistered vehicle is enough for police to impound your car.

Im not willing to bet a paycheck on it cos i havent read the legislation but i heard from a really reliable source that illegal mods can also get your car confiscated ie coloured number plate lights ( was what i was warned about cos mine were blue)

when i was down in sa a few years ago when the laws first come out for confiscating cars one of my mates lost his car for going sideways on a empty beach unlucky on his behalf that the cops where in the carpark and a bit stupid that he didnt see them but still bullsh*t. there was no one within well over 500 metres and he was doing all off 20 km/h. Lost his car for the weekend and got a court appearance & fine.
This sh*t is an absolute joke and nearly making me consider going to uni to learn law just so i can f^ck them back!

So is repeat speeding offences, drink driving, and the like. Also class that under the hoon laws now. Should have been like that since day 1  don't do a skid we'll take your car, but you can keep it if you get done DUI.

Don't know if anyone rememebrs it but there was a story years ago when someone had his car confiscated. Not sure where it was or what it was anymore, but they rocked up with the tow truck to take it and he'd totally stripped the car. Was a rolling shell. No drive line, no interior, no panels, nothing. Was a bit of a laugh.

My Brother was killed by a Hoon so to me numbers mean nothing! He was riding his motorbike home on a Thursday night when he collided with a Sandman Van which had been drag racing an SLR Torana and stalled across the road whilst doing a u-turn, it was dark brown and they had the lights off trying to restart the van, my Brother died at the scene. That was 10.30pm 18th August 1977 and not a day goes by when we don't think of what may have been, his girlfriend at the time suffered a nervous breakdown and I was only 19 years old so all I could think of was getting pissed and stoned to soften the pain. Repeat this story for every family who loses a loved one like this and you start to realize that even if you have to crush fifty hoon's cars to save just one life it would be well worth it. Just a note on my Brother's accident, the driver got off scot free as he put his girlfriend in the driver's seat and let her take the rap and the authorities didn't even notify us when the inquest was held so it was over before we could even attend. Crush hoons cars! it's a yes from me!

Having seen a couple of mates cars impounded for the first offence of 48 hours, they were parked up with other "hoon" cars, being an assortment of holden astras, daihatsu charades, hyundai excels and the likes. You will find (as per the pintara and cressida puss buckets in the first post) that most of the "hoon" offences in these cars is related to the other items in the legislation, such as unregistered, defective etc and generally not for your generally accepted "hoon" offences such as burnouts, street racing etc.

I think the law is stupid and is obviously just a money grab, and a grab for attention and acceptance from the govt.

Having said that, honestly if you are stupid enough to get caught 3 times, you deserve to have your car taken off you. I don't agree with getting it crushed, but certainly sold. And that article said another 8 cars will be sold.. I bet these are the ones that are actually worth selling, so if you've got a nice car, chances are they won't crush it, they'll sell it, and if they do crush it, probably means your car was a POS and probably better off being crushed??

Does anyone know how they can on sell it if its security on a loan? if they sold it the bank can get it back from the new owner if you default on payments and if its crushed youd have to claim it on insurance??? i dont see how it could work?

You may think your stupid if you get caught 3 times but it doesn't have to be for the same thing. Just as a pure example. You completely forget to pay rego. Boom car impounded. You take off quick from the lights and the tires chirp for all of a second. Another impoundment. You get done for a major defect boom 3rd strike your out.

you wouldnt even have to do anything wrong, you could be doin 20kph in the wet with cops behind you and due to how f**king slippery most of the roads up here have the tail end slide out, they'd more than likely pull you over and confiscate the car for hooning as they saw it as deliberate not accidental.

the law is an absolute load of shit and matt i cant blame the guy for doin that, if i knew mine was gone i'd run, get away.. and strip the car to not even a rolling shell with in 24hours leave it on blocks on the side of the road and laugh at them as they skull drag the f**ker onto the tow truck.

Haha now that would be hilarious. At what speed do they have to abort the chase? Or is it a case by case with decisions made on the go. Just a good thing to know. I wonder if while you were in a chase, you deliberately slow down to the speed limit, 'accidentally' crash, blame the police and get insurance money?

The guys going to think here's another kid using a fake ID or here's McLovin, the 25 year old Hawaiian organ donor. So what's it going to be? I am McLovin. No your not. No one's McLovin, McLovin's never existed because that's a made up, dumb, f**king fairy tale name you f**k

i think they have to abort about 160-170... hehehehe just takes them a couple minutes to get there and relise there pursuit is pointless!

watch how many people go strap on false plates when they are on their 3rd offence and crank up the police chase just for shits and giggles. Crushing somesone property isnt going to solve the problem. I wonder where it stops. Fare worse things going on besides hooning, easy fix would be a massive open area you can go to, flog your car and leave :)

Something that I can forsee is that it will be the 'well off' (either legitimate or non-legitimate) money earners that will either be off scot free or have another car back on the road in no time.

If they are going to crush 'hoons' cars, then how about crushing the genitalia of a convicted sex offender.
Same thing if you ask me.
Hmmm.

I can smell.......stupidity.

I understand where these laws are coming from BUT I feel it gives the police too much leeway to just have the power to confiscate your car, especially in conditions like the wet.
