Hey guys,

Just picked up a 1981 hilux last weekend...pretty good nick and got it for a very good price.

Got it booked in to get the road worthy done on Tuesday next week, was giving the engine bay a bit of a tidy up with degreaser and noticed that there was a bit of oil on the crossmember down below the crank pulley etc. Is it going to fail the road worthy if this is leaking? how big of a job would it be to change the seal?

Thanks
Morgan

PS - here is a picture of it...its in great condition for the age!

yes, if there is obvious dripping oil leaking out of the engine it will be failed in a heartbeat.

if it is the seal that you mention behind the crank pulley, and you have a bit of mechanical nous, shouldn't be too much of a drama. remove all belts, remove pulley, remove and replace seal, and then reverse the first two steps.

another thing to consider, if you have it booked in for a roadworthy, and you do this at your own risk, is to completely clean down the area right before you go in, as if there is no evidence of a leak there is no problem. but make sure you fix the leak asap after the roadie. this will also help in diagnosing where the leak is coming from.

Cheers, swiftest.

Yea I got out a few cans of degreaser yesterday and have cleaned and wiped out the whole engine bay and all underneath so will have a look later today and see if there is any oil, but last night there was still none after letting the engine run for half an hour or so...i don't think that it is a serious leak. It if its coming from the front main I will get it fixed asap though...
